Sneaker wave

National Weather Service Portland (NWS) issued a High Surf Advisory for the Central Oregon Coast Tuesday until 1 p.m., calling for breakers up to 30 feet and dangerous surf conditions.

According to NWS, destructive waves may wash over beaches, jetties and other structures unexpectedly. NWS warns people can be swept into the ocean if unaware.

Higher than normal run-up is expected and unpredictable sneaker waves can happen, causing logs to roll, possibly causing injury or death.

NWS says to watch out for rip currents and beach erosion and remind beachgoers to stay back from the water’s edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves.

Also included in the alert is Washington, South Washington Coast and North Oregon Coast.
