The 30-mile pursuit, initiated by Toledo Police, was ended at Mile Post 1 on the Siletz Highway –just shy of Highway 101– shortly after midnight Wednesday. Rescuers had to pull the man, identified as Michael Robert Van-Houte, up to the highway using rope and a portable stretcher. Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies worked alongside North Lincoln Fire & Rescue personnel to get the man up to an awaiting ambulance.

The condition of Van-Houte is unknown at this time, but he faces charges of driving while suspended, littering, recklessly endangering, reckless driving, eluding police (both in vehicle and on foot) and driving under the influence of a controlled substance. A total bail has been set for Van-Houte at $215,000.

  1. Perhaps a flight risk. I think it’s expected for a person to flee on foot, it doesn’t
put anyone in danger, driving off at high speed is a different issue altogether.
Nobody wants to be arrested, I can understand that, but there is a point where
it’s time to give up and deal with reality. I’m surprised the guy made it as far as he did, the Siletz road isn’t exactly safe at any speed.

  2. Kevin, I think they set it high because he is a flight risk. He has already shown that he will try to run for freedom.

  3. Guess he had to cool off before jail time. Yes bill should have left him but he may have contaminated river. Good job with spike strips they can be very effective should used them sooner.
