concealed carry oregon Republican leadership in Salem is alerting Oregonians to Senate Bill 554, which they say paves the way for regulations restricting where guns can be conceal carried.

SB 554 was heard Monday at the Capitol in the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Ballot Measure 110 Implementation.

“Concealed carry license holders are some of the most upstanding people in our state,” said Senator Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer), who is Vice-Chair of the Committee. “These people are the ones you would want to be your neighbors and friends because they protect their families and others around them. The last thing we should be doing is discouraging people from helping keep our communities safe by creating an inconsistent standard of laws across the state.”

SB 554 allows local governments and municipalities to regulate when and where concealed handgun licensees would be able to protect themselves and others. Someone carrying legally and safely with a concealed handgun permit could end up committing several crimes in the course of running errands on a Tuesday afternoon, instantly turning them into criminals.

According to Social Science Research Network, less than one-hundredth of one percent (.0074%) of Oregon concealed handgun license holders (CHL) commit felonies. The majority of which were unlikely to have involved a firearm. The FBI has indicated that nearly 3.2% of active shooter situations are stopped with someone with a concealed carry license. Other researchers have put that number as high as 16.5%.

“Thanks to our rigorous concealed carry licensing program in Oregon, CHL holders are the good guys with guns,” Senate Republican Leader Fred Girod (R-Lyons) said. “This bill is a ‘solution’ in search of a problem. The sponsors have failed to bring forth any evidence that this bill would make anyone safer. It would do the opposite. With violent crime on the rise, we can’t afford to severely curtail Oregonians’ right to self-defense.”

The bill also raises fees on CHL applications and renewals.

“Increasing gun violence has had a disproportionate impact on low-income and minority communities,” Girod continued. “The only thing increased fees will do is put the right of self-defense out of reach for these people. Wealthy and middle-class families won’t be deterred from protecting themselves and their families.

“Every life lost to gun violence is a tragedy. If we want to solve the issue of gun violence, CHL holders are the wrong place to look. Let’s follow the data.”

Monday’s public hearing set a session-record for the number of people who submitted testimony against a bill.

  1. If you buy a gun even at gun shows you have to do a background check in every state if you buy from an FFL dealer. Some but not many will allow person to person without a background check but there is nothing wrong with that. The person selling the gun if they are smart would get a copy of their driver’s license and only sell to them if they have a CCL so that they know that they can pass a background check it’s not really that hard.

  2. Covid 19 fringe benefit. No school shootings.
I’m not sure even agenda driven politicians would hope for mass murder
to get the laws they want passed, when it’s getting done on the sly to begin
with There is a ammo shortage, once I was forced to watch michael moore’s
anti gun movie, one joke was- what we need is bullet control…”I’ll
cap your a** as soon as I can afford it”
I did look up states that don’t require background checks, the information
is vague and would take a look at state by state laws, there are mandatory
checks on the federal level for all licensed dealers, however some states have their own checks, gun shows are a grey area in some states, but try searching for “where can I buy a gun without a background check” and you won’t find
out. If you want it, or think you might- buy now before it is too late.

  3. In a 2018 Facebook post uncovered by Media Matters for America, Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote that Democrats intended to increase the stringency of U.S. gun control laws. “They are going to try to pass strict gun control on the state level as well,” Greene wrote. “This war on our second amendment is going to continue and must be fought. I am told that Nancy Pelosi tells Hillary Clinton several times a month that ‘we need another school shooting’ in order to persuade the public to want strict gun control.”

  4. Bruce does have a variety of firearms, the ghost in the machine is
the shortage of ammo, gun control is creeping around in the bushes.
The show in Seaside last weekend was pathetic, sure, you can buy a gun.
    Loading it is another matter.
We hear so much about background checks, we have them here in Oregon,
maybe there are states that let you buy a firearm and just walk out the door,
I’m going to have to look that up.

  5. I have a feeling this bill may be pushed through by some shady means. But it is VERY important that it is not.

It compromises our safety and targets law-abiding individuals.

And while we are at it, we should vote out misguided Portland politicians like Sharon Meieran and Nafisa Fai, who support the legislation.

  6. This is the dumbest bill that could be passed. Why do we have people trying to pass bills on something that they don’t know anything about. The criminals don’t try to break into places that they know there are guns they go for soft and easy targets like your gun FREE zones. If you have your CHL you should be able to carry and protect yourself and others. The 2nd amendment says shall not be infringed. Hey all of the anti gun people that are purchasing guns good for you but don’t try and hide it from your friends you should encourage them to purchase also. I was visiting Lincoln City Sporting Goods today they have a great supply of guns to choose from along with some modern Sporting Rifles. We need to get osp to speed up they are approving people that applied 19 days ago that’s not ok. Oregon also won’t let you buy a shotgun or rifle outside of Oregon? Why is this are you doing a gun registration? This is not ok I was in Montana and I was going to go hunt with my cousin but I wasn’t able to purchase a rifle when I was there. Oregon does there own background check instead of just going through the federal one Why is this for a gun registration? This needs to be changed.

  7. This bill is crap. Criminals are the ones you need to worry about, not
    trained people with CHL permits.
I know just as much about the use of deadly force and when it’s legal
    as any police person.
This is exactly the kind of dog flop you get when you elect morons.
Just the other day, I saw some democrat claiming an AR15 fires .50 caliber.
Well that’s just the kind of person you do not want making gun laws.
