Oregon Senators to make town hall appearances

Oregon Senators Town Halls

Democrat Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have organized town halls in January at Taft High and Oregon Coast Community College’s Newport campus.

Wyden has been a United States senator since 1996 and served at the United States House of Representatives from 1981-1996. Wyden is the dean of Oregon’s congressional delegation and chairs the Senate Finance Committee.

Merkley has served as Oregon’s junior United States senator since 2009. Before becoming a senator, Merkley was a five-time Oregon House of representatives member who represented Multnomah County. He was the 64th Oregon Speaker of the House.

Wyden will be in Newport at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 9 at the Oregon Coast Community College, 400 SE College Way.

Merkley will be in Lincoln City at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, at Taft High 7-12, 3780 SE Spyglass Ridge Dr.

The public is invited to attend and Oregon’s federal politicians will meet with constituents to hear topics of interest and to discuss upcoming legislation.

  1. Please try to be constructive with your comments. Use a mirror for previewing your statements, and let us hear your best ideas for uniting the states and all people in our country. Our senators have the unenviable job of having to work in Washington, D.C. We get to stay here in Oregon, while they brave the depths of the swamp in order to get federal aid in many ways.
I would like to hear about how the federal lands in ORegon are receiving support so that we can conserve some environmental treasures for future generations.
Also, I want to know why it is so difficult to complete a simple vote on whether we should switch the clock twice a year, can we agree to a Daylight Savings year round schedule? I have learned not to expect anything from Congress, but, surely, we can start with an agreed upon time to set our clocks to.
The effort to steal parts of Oregon and merge into Idaho to form a “Greater Idaho” might be a local issue, does the federal government have to validate a new state’s formation? If the action somehow becomes a reality, will people who then become Idahoans lose privileges that we Oregonians have, such as: in-state tuition,K-12 school funding, access to health care, ODOT maintenance for roads, ODFW park and recreation facilities. Could Oregon then establish a new fee schedule for the “freshly anointed” Idahoans, such as: school activities, sports events, interdistrict competitive events, camping, coastal tourism taxes, sno-park. It seems like the counties that are looking for change might need some explanations and more info.
Lastly, I would surely like to see the battle between the parties subside. Congress has buried the subjects and issues that matter under a coffin full of redundant arguments including women, babies, race identification, Jesus vs. Ali, and guns.
Shoot, it creeps me out that we here in America can’t send our children to school without praying constantly for their safe return home. I learned about separation of church and state when I attended public school, now we can’t separate church and hate. Do better, people. WE the PEOPLE are responsible for our government. Be civil, creative, kind, and victorious, in saving lives.
