The annual Speed Boat Time Trials were renamed the “Rockey Stone Memorial Kilo’s" in 1995 in honor of the person instrumental in setting up and organizing the event for many years and the ¼ Mile in honor of Buzz Thorsen who took leadership after Rockey retired.
And like the end of a ride, there is silence. No birds calling, no breeze rustling branches. No people talking about their day. According to the latest water quality report for July 23, 2024 from the Devils Lake Water Improvement District (DLWID), all areas tested are "green" meaning low risk with water temps between 70-74 degrees. Results are posted at DLWID.org.

As over 50 boats of every make and model gathered near Regatta park at 4p.m. people waved back and forth between the crafts with occasional shouts of "Happy Fourth of July!"
A classic pontoon boat still emblazoned with "Blue Heron Landing" on its side lead the route around the lake. As all the boats trailed respectfully behind there truly was an air of happiness at being together again after so long an absence.

And while the desire and the knowledge of what needs to be done is available, what appears to not be available is the ability of the various government agencies with their respective fingers in the Devils lake pie to cooperate to save the lake and the creatures that depend upon it for life.
