“Today was a learning loss,” coach Sandy Stuart said. “We have a young team and we are working on some positioning things defensively and today some of our weaknesses showed.”

Taft, which opened its season Monday with a 12-2 five-inning home victory over Gervais, scored once in the first, sixth and seventh innings behind two hits from Peterson and junior catcher Hailee Danneker, and one each from senior Emma Coulter, her freshman sister, Olivia, and sophomore Kayla Lininger.

“Our freshman hit well again tonight,” Stuart said. “Chloe had some great defensive plays in right field and an excellent home run in the seventh to give us a little bit of momentum. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

Lininger, Peterson and freshman Addie Gates scored for Taft, while the Coulter sisters and Peterson drove in one run each.

Emma Coulter (1-1) struck out seven and walked three in going the distance for the Tigers.

“We came out a little bit nervous, but I am confident we will build off the loss and be able to grow as a team,” Stuart said. “Our captains dealt with the loss well and had some encouraging words after the game, so we are in a great place for our leaders to help our younger players grow.”

Taft will return to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Santiam Christian.
