A pulled hamstring suffered late Friday in his final qualifying run cost Taft High senior sprinter Gabe Arce-Torres a chance at three titles and a trip to State, and the boys a shot at the team crown Saturday in the Class 3A West Valley League District Track and Field Championships in Dayton.
Taft High sophomore Ella Knott broke her own school record to win the gold medal in the javelin Friday with a throw of 137 feet, 2 inches at the Class 3A West Valley League District Track and Field Championships in Dayton.
Taft High 7-12’s Kadence James won the high jump for the girls and Brayan Mateo won two sprints for the boys Monday at the Coast Valley League’s 7th/8th Grade District Track and Field Championships in Lincoln City.
Junior javelin hurler Mad Scott joined senior runners Gabe Arce-Torres and Preston Nightingale with winning efforts Thursday to lead the Taft High boys to the Sheridan West Valley League track and field championship.
Senior distance runner Preston Nightingale won two events to lead four individual winners on the boys side, and five girls claimed gold medals Thursday in a sweep of team competition at a Northwest Oregon League track and field meet in Nestucca.
Arce-Torres, who turns 18 Saturday, will join senior golfer Maya Hatton and senior soccer player Naomi Rini at 11:45 a.m. in signing letters to attend colleges on athletic scholarships.
